
UNO's Thommes earns two regional honorsOMAHA - Senior middle hitter Ellen Thommes was named to two different all-South Central Region teams this week. She earned a spot on the American Volleyball Coaches Association first team and the Daktronics second team.
Thommes led UNO with a .388 attack percentage, 3.16 kills per set, 1.02 blocks and 3.97 points. She was ranked second in the MIAA in attack percentage and blocks and fourth in points in the latest statistics report. Her attack percentage was the third best in school history.
Thommes earned honorable mention AVCA all-South Central Region last year.
Mavericks lose in first round of tournamentWARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Mavericks were out hit in every set as they fell, 3-1 to Washburn in the first round of the NCAA South Central Region tournament Thursday at the Central Missouri Multipurpose Building.
Seventh-seeded Nebraska-Omaha ended its season at 20-14 while the No. 2 seed Lady Blues improved to 33-4. They took the match, 23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-22, and they'll play West Texas A&M in the second round Friday.
Kelli Goeser led UNO with 14 kills and a .224 attack percentage while Sara Kampschnieder had 13 kills. Emily Myers had 37 assists for UNO, ranked 23rd in the nation.

Attendance at Nebraska volleyball games ranks near topINDIANAPOLIS — Nebraska ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division I home volleyball attendance last fall behind Hawaii, which averaged 6,423 for 20 matches.
The Huskers, who played 15 of their home contests at the 4,030-seat NU Coliseum, averaged 5,197 for 18 home matches. NU drew 13,870 to the Devaney Center on Sept. 13 for a loss to UCLA.
The Huskers also were credited with home matches for two NCAA regional tournament contests at Qwest Center Omaha. NU drew 8,935 for a Dec. 11 win over Iowa State and 9,253 for a Dec. 12 loss to Texas. Those Qwest Center Omaha contests were part of the Husker season-ticket package and set up by the Nebraska athletic department.

FREMONT - Jessy Schroedter's hard work in volleyball is paying off in multiple ways.
Schroedter, a senior-to-be at Fremont Bergan, is competing this week in the USA Junior Olympics national tournament in Reno, Nev. Her River City Juniors 171 team qualified by winning a regional tournament in the spring at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

When former Midland Lutheran head coach Terry Gamble got the head coaching job at McNeese State earlier this spring, he drew on his Nebraska ties to finish off his staff.
Already on the staff was Nicole Wilson, a Lincoln Christian graduation and standout player at the University of Missouri from 2003-2006, so Gamble went out and hired Dave Zahner, who had been an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
Zahner will begin his first season as an assistant coach with the McNeese State University Cowgirls, serving as the recruiting coordinator.
Clay Center's Sorensen signs with University of Nebraska-OmahaOMAHA, Neb. - Abby Sorensen, a first team all-state honoree her final two years and the all-time kills leader at Clay Center High School has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Nebraska-Omaha and play volleyball for the Mavericks this fall. Maverick head coach Rose Shires announced the signing Tuesday.
The 5-11 outside hitter from Aurora, Neb., also earned honorable mention all-state her sophomore year. She closed her high school career as Clay Center's all-time leader in kills in a career (1,234), season (549 as a senior) and match (32 as a senior). Her senior year she was named to the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal Star Class D-2 all-state first teams.The Journal Star named her honorary captain and the Hastings Tribune named her the player of the year.
She earned the same all-state honors her junior year when she led all classes in the state with a .520 hitting percentage.
