Midland Lutheran volleyball season comes to end

Midland Lutheran College’s volleyball season came to an end Wednesday with a 3-2 loss at the University of Sioux Falls in the first round of the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament.

Eighth seeded USF won the match over the No. 9 seeded Lady Warriors 22-25, 30-28, 25-11, 19-25, 15-9.

The Hastings College volleyball team defeated Midland Lutheran 27-25, 25-13, 25-20 in their conference opener in Fremont.

Kendra Schwein led the offense once again with 14 kills, while Kelsey Wells had 8, Allie Mohrman and Leah Dostal each had 7 kills to balance the attack. Haley Beardsley and Lindsey Sitorius shared the setting duties with 28 and 14 assists apiece. Liz Van Kirk and Christina Headrick each served 2 aces, while Melynne Kessler dug up 26 attacks. Mohrman and Dostal lead the defense at the net with 3 blocks apiece.

Midland Lutheran ends five-match losing streak

Cara Fleischmann led the Flames (6-10) with eight kills. The Warriors (4-8) snapped a five-match skid.

Dana College sweeps Midland Lutheran

Dana College swept the Midland Lutheran College volleyball team Thursday 3-0.

Dana won 25-18, 25-23-25-20 to improve to 10-5 on the season and 2-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Midland is now 3-8 overall and 0-3 in GPAC play.

Amanda Hunt led Midland with 12 kills while Halie Wewel added 11.

Creighton assistant Paul Giesselmann hired as head coach at Midland Lutheran

FREMONT - Midland Lutheran College today hired Paul Giesselmann to take over as Head Volleyball Coach, effective June 1. Giesselmann will join the Midland Warriors from Creighton University where he has been coaching volleyball since 2003.

Midland’s Athletic Director, Keith Kramme, said, “We couldn’t be more excited to have Paul joining our staff at Midland. He brings with him a wealth of experience and success. His career-to-date coaching record of 227-80 speaks for itself. There is no question that his experience from his time at College of St. Mary and then at Creighton will be a tremendous addition to the Midland volleyball program and to the entire Midland community.”

Gamble leaves MLC for McNeese State

FREMONT - Head volleyball coach Terry Gamble has left the Midland Lutheran College volleyball program for the same position at NCAA Division I McNeese State in Louisiana.

Gamble served as head coach at Midland for nine months. He ended the 2009 season with an 8-18 overall record and 4-12 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

Wewel, Putnam earn GPAC honors for Midland Lutheran

Midland Lutheran College volleyball players senior Britni Putnam and sophomore Halie Wewel were named honorable mention by the Great Plains Athletic Conference recently.

Randa Hulstein of Northwestern was the selected as the Hauff Mid-America Sports/ GPAC Player of the Year and Kyle Van Den Bosch from Northwestern was named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Coach of the Year.

Northwestern, Doane and Morningside each had three on the 15-player first team.

GPAC All-Conference Volleyball team released

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – The 2009 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Volleyball All-
Conference Team has been selected. Randa Hulstein from Northwestern was the selected as the Hauff
Mid-America Sports/GPAC Player-of-the-Year. Kyle Van Den Bosch from Northwestern was named
the Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Coach-of-the-Year. Northwestern was the regular season
champion for 2009 with a 16-0 league record. The GPAC All-Conference teams were selected by the
league coaches.

Concordia earns sweep of Midland Lutheran

Concordia University cruised to a 3-0 sweep over Midland Lutheran on Senior Night at the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center . Scores of the match were 25-14, 25-20 and 25-22. Concordia improved to 11-20 overall and 3-12 in the GPAC with the win, while Midland dropped to 8-16 overall and 4-11 in the GPAC with the loss.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 6-1 start to open the match and settled for the easy 25-14 win in the first set.

The second game was much more competitive early on, but Concordia pulled away late to take a 24-16 lead. Midland attempted to rally, but a Chelsea Vaudt kill sealed the 25-20 win for the Bulldogs.
